Function, Scope of Supply:

The ITER site is enclosed by two fence systems. The inner fence surrounds a high security area. All ITER buildings and structures except the cooling basins and structures, the laboratory office building, and the pulsed and steady state switchyards, are inside the high security area.

The scope of the present package is the design and construction of the following Reinforced Concrete Buildings (volumes of reinforced concrete in bracket:

·        Tokamak complex (121,053 m3)

·        Laydown, Assembly & RF Heating bldg (49,942 m3)

·        Hot cell (45,000 m3)

·        Radwaste bldg (3,476 m3)

·        AC distribution bldg   (1,993 m3)

·        Electrical Power Supply bldg (3,389 m3)

·        Control bldg (8,073 m3)

·        Tunnels & Bridges (30,800 m3)

·        Foundations and Tanks (17,000 m3)

The scope of work includes moreover (only main elements quoted)

·        about 1,700,000 m3 earthworks for site leveling

·        about 870,000 m3 of foundations and tunnels excavation

·        the construction of the main bridge crane (twin 750 tons crane 41 m span)

·        all technological systems of the buildings including electrical distribution, HVAC, water and sewage, minor auxiliaries etc.

Description, Technologies :

The main element of this package is the Tokamak complex (110 m length x 50 m width with a total height of 74 m (17 underground). It is an highly integrated building (tokamak bldg, tritium bldg & diagnostics bldg) with important safety function (confinement - pressure & radioactive products, shielding, access control, physical separation of safety relevant systems). Its layout driven by the integration of the systems, space for maintenance operations, installation of large component, structural aspects. The building foresees seismic isolation The manufacturing technology foreseen are those utilized for the large power stations/nuclear plant civil engineering.

Other buildings are more conventional in nature, though all they require the use of safety margins, manufacturing technologies and quality control for a nuclear grade installation.
