Function, Scope of Supply:

The ITER NB H&CD System consists of two injectors that are used to heat the plasma and to drive the plasma current (hereinafter these two injectors are referred to as the Heating Neutral Beams, HNB).

 The NB H&CD system allows injecting in the core of plasma deuterium atoms with energy of 1MeV. The total power delivered by each injector is 16.5 MW.

The scope for this package includes the  the beam-line components, i.e. the components used to convert the negative ions beam exiting the beam source into a neutral beam that, passing through the NB duct, is delivered inside the vacuum vessel.

The deliverables for this Package 53-3 consist of the fabrication of the following hardware (including assistance for assembly on site)

·        neutraliser for the HNBs (two units)

·        residual ion dump for the HNBs (two units)

·        calorimeter for the HNBs (two units)

 

Description, Technologies :

The three components forming the beamline are in essence high performance water cooled heat-exchangers that have to exhaust the power deriving from fractions of the beam intercepted during the process of neutralization.

The Neutraliser consists of four vertical channels of rectangular cross-section, each 3 m long and 1600 mm high. The channels are lined by copper (Copper UNS C10200) panels 40 mm thick which feature water cooling channels obtained for deep-drilling. The Residual Ion Dump  structure consists of five dump panels a support frame, manifolds and headers for coolant supply. Five vertical panels - two under high voltage potential and three grounded, 20 mm thick each, produce five channels, about 100 mm wide each The power is deposited on each panel on an area extending 1500 mm in height and 1800 mm axial length. Each panel is composed of 72 rectangular tube elements made of Cu Cr Zr alloy, installed vertically with a pitch of 25mm.

The calorimeter (a moveable beam dump, the calorimeter, can be introduced into the beam path downstream of the RID, allowing the injectors to be commissioned)  consists if a fixed stainless steel support structure, two panels formed by an axial array of 20 mm diameter tube elements, the coolant manifolds and a panel frame and the main headers including four bellows that provide a flexible connection for the inlet and outlet coolant headers (two for the left-hand panel and two for the right hand panel) to the corresponding inlet and outlet manifolds on the panels;two pneumatic drives coupled to the panels via a magnetic drive;
