Function, Scope of Supply:

The ITER NB H&CD System consists of two injectors that are used to heat the plasma and to drive the plasma current (hereinafter these two injectors are referred to as the Heating Neutral Beams, HNB).

 The NB H&CD system allows injecting in the core of plasma deuterium atoms with energy of 1MeV. The total power delivered by each injector is 16.5 MW.

The scope for this package consist of the following hardware

·        2 Beam Source for the HNBs

·        2 High Voltage Bushing for the HNBs

The Supplier shall also provide the final assembly and testing on site of the components.

 

Description, Technologies :

The Beam Source: Deuterium negative (D-) ions are extracted from an arc discharge produced between tungsten filaments (cathode) and the source body (anode). The plasma and extraction grids form the extractor (height ~ 1,540 mm, width ~ 580 mm). The D- extracted from the ion source is accelerated, to 1 MeV energy, by a 5-stage electrostatic accelerator featuring water-cooled multi-aperture grids. The full assembly of the beam-source is operating within the primary machine vacuum.

The High Voltage Bushing: the primary vacuum is sealed by a 1 MV, five stage bushing made up of two coaxial insulators: the inner, facing the vacuum, in ceramic (1.56 m outer diameter, OD) the outer, facing SF6 gas, in fiber-reinforced plastic (1.76 m outer diameter). All the electrical, water cooking, gas and services for the beams source are passing through the HV bushing.

The ensemble of the ion source, accelerator grids, high current density and high voltage requires cutting-edge technologies in precision mechanics, vacuum technologies and electro technical engineering with complete command of high-voltage technologies (1 MV) under vacuum. 

Required  technologies includes :Precision machining (copper and copper alloys and stainless steel), ultra-high vacuum construction, electro deposition techniques for copper,  Ceramic and epoxy insulators technology for high-vacuum applications and  with construction of large insulators and ceramic materials depositions , high voltage feedhroughs, high current flexible contacts
