Function, Scope of Supply:

RF power at the millimeter wavelength (electron cyclotron frequency in the ITER magnetic field) is launched into the plasma interacting and directly heating the electrons. The energy is then transferred to the ions by collisions.
Two systems: i) heating and current drive (H&CD) and stabilisation for neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) at 170 GHz and ii) assisting the poloidal field system in establishing plasma breakdown and current initiation at 120 GHZ
This procurement package is related to the manifacture of the RF power sources (gyrotrons).

Description, Technologies :

- 24 gyrotrons of 1 MW, 170 GHZ, CW are needed to inject 20 MW (Note: a 2 MW gyrotron is being developed in Europe)
- 3 gyrotrons of 1 MW, 120 GHZ unit power for the EC breakdown assist system
- Gyrotrons are of the Collector Potential Depressed (CPD) type to increase efficiency
- EC H&CD gyrotrons use, by means of switches, both equatorial and top ports launchers
- The same equatorial launcher will be used by EC H&CD and EC breakdown assist gyrotrons
