Function, Scope of Supply:

RF power at the millimeter wavelength (electron cyclotron frequency in the ITER magnetic field) is launched into the plasma interacting and directly heating the electrons. The energy is then transferred to the ions by collisions.
The launchers are key components of the electron cyclotron heating & current drive system. They are 2 (upper and equatorial) and are used for launching the RF power into the plasma. The upper launcher and the equatorial launcher are located in the upper and lower ports respectively. Both launchers are operated at a frequency of 170 GHz. The same RF power sources are alternately used between the two kinds of launchers by switching the waveguide connection.
This procurement package is related to the manufacture of the upper launcher

Description, Technologies :

The main upper launcher components are: i) the port plug structure & closure plates (massive stainless steel structure), ii) internal shields (SS + water for neutron shielding), iii) waveguides, mirrors & diagnostic equipments, iv) high power CVD diamonds windows (24 off) and v) steering mechanisms (high precision).
All components are actively cooled and adapted for Remote Handling. Tight tolerances are necessary for overall high-precision alignments.
