WBS 2.3 Remote Handling

Remote Handling

Procurement Package 2.3-2
"Divertor Cassette Remote Handling"

ITER Cost 2001 for Sharing: 12 kIUA

Sharing: EU=100%

Function, Scope of Supply:

The system is intended for the remote handling removal of the 54 cassettes (modular supporting structure of 12 tons weigh each) forming the divertor (see package 1.7-1) from the vacuum vessel and their transfer to transfer cask.

During the nuclear operation of the machine (starting as soon the plasma is formed using deuterium) the maintenance has to be performed in a complete remote mode due to the level of activation of the components. This operation is a planned maintenance operation that shall be repeated several times during the life of the reactor considering the foreseen damage of the high heat flux components of the divertor

Description, Technologies :

The maintenance concept is based on the extraction of the cassettes through three access ports in the lower part of the vacuum vessel distributes evenly at 120 angular degrees.

The overall system includes a hydraulic mover (using water in place of oil for hydraulic actuations). The mover is capable of translating, raise for extraction the cassette

Special end-effectors have to be provided for the cut and reconnection of the hydraulic connections of the water cooling pipes to the corresponding inlet outlet of the divertor cassettes

This system shall have to operational for the first assembly of the machine to allow the installation of the 54 divertor cassettes and for the performance of the hydraulic connections.

The system shall be utilized for the full operational life of ITER though modification and upgrades are likely to be introduced
