Function, Scope of Supply:

The first wall high-heat flux components in the divertor area are heat-exchanger plates which receive the energy of the particles deflected onto them by the specially-configured magnetic field lines. The heat flux can reach a power density of 10 MW/m˛ which can reach in transitory conditions 20 MW/m˛.

These elements are intended to be replaced during the operative life of the machine. Each of the 54 cassettes features an inner plate and an outer plate formed each by the juxtaposition of 16 tubular elements.

The plasma particles (impurities and helium ashes) are neutralized at the contact of the divertor plates and extracted by pumping through openings in the cassette structure.

 

Description, Technologies :

The structure of the thermal protection on the internal side consists of one plate (consisting of 16 copper-alloy tubular elements per plate). Each tubular element consists of a pipe in a special high strength copper alloy (Copper-Chrome-Zirconium) armoured with materials with higher melting/ablation temperatures (Tungsten tiles or Composite Carbon Fibres tiles depending on the specific requirements of the various part of the plates). The tiles are brazed to the copper pipe to guarantee a reliable thermal contact. The process of joining of copper-chrome-zirconium pipes to tungsten and CFC is a complex technology that has been extensively developed by ITER R&D and form the critical aspect of the fabrication of such components.   The tubular elements are grouped together on a support structure and connected mechanically and hydraulically to the divertor cassette by TIG welding and mechanical supports.
