WBS 1.6 BLANKET SYSTEM

First Wall Panels for Blanket Modules

Procurement Package 1.6-1A
"Blanket First Wall "
ITER Cost 2001 for Sharing: 87.0 kIUA
Sharing: China = 10%; EU = 30%; Japan = 10 %;
South Korea = 10 %; Russia = 20%; USA = 20%
Function, Scope of Supply:

The basic function of the blanket system is to provide the main thermal and nuclear shielding to the vessel and external machine components. The blanket system consists of modules leading a segmentation along poloidal and toroidal directions.
Such modular configuration implies a mechanical attachment system. The blanket modules (BMs) are attached directly to the vacuum vessel. Manifolds that supply cooling water to the modules are mounted on the vacuum vessel behind the modules. The module configuration consists of a shield block to which separate first wall (FW) panels are mounted. The FW is the element, equipped with armour material, facing the plasma and it is subjected to severe heat loads.
The modularity of the design is facilitating the sharing for manufacture (see above) since one or more toroidal rows of blanket modules and FW panels may be procured by a single partner.

Description, Technologies :

The First wall/shield modules comprise a plasma facing first wall (FW) section, and a shielding section. The FW is designed to be de-mountable from the shielding section to reduce the module cost and the radioactive waste. Two horizontal and a vertical key are attached on the vacuum vessel in the inboard region and extended into keyways of the module to support the electromagnetic poloidal and toroidal forces. In the outboard region, three stub keys are attached at the flexible connector housings, and extend into keyways in the module. The keys are designed to open towards the centre of the module to avoid the key and key way sticking together under thermal expansion of the module and vacuum vessel.
