Function, Scope of Supply:

The superconductors allow to produce the TF coils satisfying the requirements in terms of magnetic field. The selection of Nb3Sn superconductor for TF coils has important impacts on the configuration and manufacture of these coils. Nb3Sn superconductor is a brittle material that is formed from the ductile form by a heat treatment at about 650C for about 200 hours. All conductor forming operations have to be completed before this heat treatment and subsequent conductor handling must be strictly controlled to avoid damage caused by excessive strain.
The whole supply (split according to the sharing above) consists of about 88 km of Nb3Sn cable in a steel circular jacket.

Description, Technologies :

The supply involves the following main technical activities:
- production of superconducting strand (Nb3Sn)
- performance of cabling work
- production of extruded circular jacket sections
- butt welding of jacket sections
- jacketing the cable using the pull-through / roll-down technique
