Function, Scope of Supply:

The Poloidal Field (PF) coils are 6 and oriented on horizontal planes. They work in pulsed mode and provide the vertical component of the magnetic filed required to confine the plasma.
The supply of this package is related to the fabrication on-site of the 4 large PF coils.

Description, Technologies :

The PF winding packs use superconducting cables in niobium titanium, cooled by means of supercritical helium at a temperature of 4.5 Kelvin.
The conductors (procured in 1.1-6C) are isolated electrically using a Kapton-based system impregnated under vacuum with epoxy resin.
PF coils have diameter varying between 8 and 24 m while the weight ranges from 130 t (PF2) to 385 t (PF3). Main fabrication steps are:
- winding the conductor supplied by ITER in double pancakes
- polymide-glass insulation tape with epoxy vacuum-pressure imregantion
- making terminal joints and helium inlets on the conductor
- insulating the conductor and stacking double pancakes to form the full winding pack - installing coil clamps
- installing termination, helium headers and instrumentation
Besides conductor the parts supplied by ITER are insulation breaks and instrumentation sensors & wires.

PF Coils #2, #3, #4 and #5 shall be produced by Europe on site with also PFCoil #6 (see 1.1-3A)
