Function, Scope of Supply:

The TF coil case consists of thick steel plates surrounding the winding pack providing structural integrity versus in-plane and out-of-plane forces acting during operation. The toroidal array of 18 TF coils, mechanically joined through inner and outer intercoil structures, is very stiff and it is practically the main mechanical structure of the tokamak basic machine. The TF magnet system supports other components like the thermal shield, the PF coils and the correction coils.
The scope of the supply of this procurement package is the production of the TF coil case sub-assemblies and the related winding pack insertion and TF coil closure and finishing of the 10 (9 + 1 spare) winding pack produce by EU (see 1.1-1A). The TF coil case sub-assemblies (including friction joint panels, shear keys for inner intercoil structures and expansion bolts for outer intercoil structures) shall be produced by Japan and delivered to Europe. The 10% sharing for Europe is related, for the winding packs fabricated in 1.1-1A, to the finishing phase and the delivering of the 9 + 1 TF coils to the Cadarache site. Finishing phase consists in the insertion procedure of the winding pack in the TF coil case sub-assemblies, the subsequent closure welds and the impregnation phase. Final machining and packing follow of the complete TF coils.

Description, Technologies :

The work related to EU consists in the vertical insertion in the U-shaped TF coil case sub-assemblies, positioning of the plate-shaped TF coil case sub-assemblies, 2 poloidal closure welds and 2 transversal closure welds, positioning for impregnation of the winding pack / case assembly gap (final impregnation), warming up of the TF coil and final impregnation, final mechanical machining at the intercoil structure interfaces. Main technologies involved are: handling of large and heavy items, one-sided narrow gap welding of thick plates/forgings in austenitic steel, epoxy resin impregnation, surface machining, metrology.
